Returns the trace of an  (i.e. square) matrix , i.e. the sum of the elements on the main diagonal (from upper left to lower right) of , i.e.:

 

 

where  is the entry on the i’th row and j’th column of .

 

The trace is a linear map which is invariant under cyclic permutations, e.g. in general  but  etc.
